Great guns! is HE her uncle? (pg.75)

"Why THAT'S all right. Miss Hooker she tole me, PARTICULAR, that her uncle Hornback—"

"Great guns! is HE her uncle?"

A young man came into town with Miss Hooker, which was the rich Hornback's niece. When he was first seen, people at the dock where acting negative towards him and they believed he was a no one, until they found out who they actually were there tone and mood towards them suddenly chnaged. They began to act in a favorable manor, due to thier greed. Twain points out that the character of someone towards another is changed by greed and in wanting what the other person has. This can be seen in American society stil today. When someone around them wins the lottery, everyone tends to get closer to that person because of greed. They change the way the act in front of the rich person, simply to try to acquire what they want.
